ABS maps the stats for ACT and region

A new view of the population, family and housing characteristics of the Australian Capital Territory and region, through a series of maps, was released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The 26 colour maps in the publication ACT and Region . . . A Statistical Atlas (cat. no. 1381.8) illustrate a range of social, demographic and economic characteristics for the ACT and the surrounding Australian Capital Region (ACR).

Topics covered range from median monthly mortgages to fertility rates. Each topic has two maps, one for the ACT and one for the ACR, for comparison between ACT suburbs and between the ACT and surrounding areas.

Some highlights from the publication include:
  • The ACT population growth was 4% between 1998 and 2003. Queanbeyan grew by 18%.
  • Increases in population were also recorded for the majority of Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) in the ACR between 1998 and 2003.
  • The total fertility rate (births per woman) for the ACT was 1.57 children, averaged over the three years from 2000 to 2002.
  • The total fertility rate of the SLAs in the ACR was generally above 1.2 children.
  • The age dependency ratio is a measure of the burden of non-workers on workers. In Canberra, areas in South Canberra and Tuggeranong showed high age dependency ratios. Eurobodalla had the highest ratio (68%) of the ACR.
  • The Yarrowlumla SLAs (part A and B) were the only areas in the ACR to record a higher median monthly mortgage ($1,068 and $1,350 per month respectively) than the ACT ($957).
  • There were 10 ACT suburbs with over 50% of private dwellings being purchased in 2001.
