Irrigation has allowed agricultural activities in areas of Tasmania where they would not otherwise have occurred.

In 1999-2000, the dominant irrigated crop was pastures, comprising 45% of total area irrigated in Tasmania.

A number of factors affect the choice of irrigation methods: cost, available technology, soil type, type of crop, and climate and topography.

In 1999-2000, spraying was by far the dominant irrigation method used in Tasmania.
