This paper discusses the background to the post-1976 changes made to population estimates and describes the methodology employed in the current series. It raises significant problems surrounding the adequacy of the current series and the options for future estimates. Readers are invited to comment on the issues raised and in particular to express opinion on the desirability or advisability of the options.
