Latest population of states and territories out tomorrow

Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 18, 2003 the Australian Bureau of Statistics will release the latest estimated resident population of Australia and each state and territory as at 30 September 2002.

The population estimates are based on the latest available data including:
  • final 2001 Census results
  • final net undercount of the population at the 2001 Census
  • final estimates of residents temporarily overseas on Census night
  • final estimates of births, deaths, overseas and interstate migration for 1996-2001
  • preliminary estimates of births, deaths, overseas and interstate migration for September Quarter 2001 to September Quarter 2002

Summary statistics will be released on the ABS website under the title Population, Australian States and Territories (cat. no. 3239.0.55.001) and will be available from 11:30am, Canberra time. Because this is an electronic only publication it will not be dropped to boxes in the Canberra Press Gallery.
