APPENDIX 1 - DESCRIPTION OF COMMODITY GROUPS
This appendix provides a description of the specific agricultural commodities that are included in each commodity group, as collected on the ABS Agricultural Survey 2008–09 (note that the specific data items collected on the Agricultural Census/surveys vary slightly from year-to-year).
CEREALS FOR GRAIN/SEED
This commodity group includes:
- Wheat for grain
- Oats for grain
- Barley for grain
- Sorghum for grain
- Maize for grain
- Triticale for grain
- Millet for grain
- All other cereals for grain or seed
Important note: rice is not included in this commodity group.
In 2007–08 maize, triticale and millet were not collected separately and were included under 'Other broadacre crops' as 'All other crops' (see below).
TOTAL HAY PRODUCTION
This commodity group includes the following:
- Pastures for hay
- Cereals for hay
Includes 'other crops for hay (including vetches)' in 2005–06, 2006–07 and 2007–08, however from '2000–01 to 2004–05' and in 2008–09 'other crops for hay' were included in other broadcare crops. See Explanatory Notes Appendix 2, paragraphs 2-6 for details. For 'volume of water applied' tables, 'other crops for hay' were included in 'Other broadacre crops' in every year except for 2007–08, when they were included in 'Total hay production'. See Explanatory Notes Appendix 2, paragraphs 9-10 for details.
PASTURES FOR HAY
This commodity group includes the following:
- Lucerne pasture for hay
- Other pasture for hay
CEREALS FOR HAY
Commodity description: Cereals (including wheat, oats, and forage sorghum) cut for hay.

This commodity group includes the following:

This commodity group includes:

SUGAR CANE
This commodity group includes:
- sugar cane for crushing
