GROSS VALUE OF IRRIGATED AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION (GVIAP)
In 2009-10, the total Gross Value of Irrigated Agricultural Production (GVIAP) for Australia was $11.5 billion. The three commodities with the highest GVIAP in Australia were vegetables valued at $2.4 billion, fruit at $2.2 billion and dairy production, which had a GVIAP of $1.8 billion.
In the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) region, the total GVIAP was $4.4 billion, which was 38% of the total GVIAP for Australia. In 2009-10, the commodities with the highest GVIAP in the MDB were fruit at $1.1 billion, grapes valued at $719 million and dairy production with a GVIAP of $624 million.
In most states and territories, vegetables, fruit and dairy production were also the commodities with highest GVIAP totals. For example in 2009-10, in South Australia the GVIAP for vegetables was $393 million, and in Western Australia it was $253 million, which constituted 29% and 33% of total GVIAP in those jurisdictions. New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory went against this trend in 2009-10, with cotton having the highest GVIAP in New South Wales at $394 million, and nursery production having the highest in the Australian Capital Territory at $2.4 million.
