- In the September quarter 2009, several improvements to the sample frame and design of the Survey of Private New Capital Expenditure were introduced, including incorporation of the 2006 Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), (cat. no. 1292.0). The historic data series has been revised to align with the changes introduced last quarter.

- Total new capital expenditure for Western Australia fell in the December quarter (chain volume measures) by 2.3% (trend) and 2.6% (seasonally adjusted). This contrasted with national increases of 0.5% (trend) and 5.5% (seasonally adjusted).
- A large fall in the capital expenditure on building and structures in the December quarter (4.4% trend, 6.7% seasonally adjusted) was offset by a strong increase in capital expenditure on equipment, plant and machinery, recording growth of 3.0% in trend and 6.3% in seasonally adjusted terms.
- In trend terms, total expenditure in the December 2009 quarter was 5.2% lower than for the same quarter of the previous year, with the seasonally adjusted figure reporting a fall of 10.5%.
- Despite a 'flattening' trend in recent quarters, and a break in the trend series in March 2007 due to the privatisation of Telstra, total new capital expenditure in Western Australia quadrupled during the last decade.

- Original data show that new capital expenditure on manufacturing recorded a strong growth of 35% in December 2009, after an 11% fall the previous quarter. The monthly movements are reflected by an increase of over 10% since December 2008.
- New capital expenditure on mining increased by 6% (original data) in the December 2009 quarter. However, it has fallen by almost 20% from the December 2008 quarter, when it recorded its highest value since the index began ($6.7 billion).
