AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)
NAME OF COLLECTION
The Survey of Mental Health and Well-being (SMHWB)
OVERVIEW
The SMHWB was conducted in 1997 and is a comprehensive survey of Australian adults' mental health.
The objectives of the survey were to provide information on the prevalence of selected major mental disorders, the level of disability associated with these disorders, and the health services used and help needed as a consequence of mental health problems of Australians aged 18 years or more.
Topics covered by the SMHWB include the objectives listed above and a range of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics including education, employment and income and housing. Data items within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data items relevant to migrants and ethnicity.
The ABS will be conducting the second national Survey of Mental Health and Well-being in the second half of 2007, with the support of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. Information from the second survey will be crucial to the creation of further National Mental Health Plans, to be developed by state health departments and the Australian Government.
