STAGE OF PRODUCTION COMMENTARY
STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW
In September quarter 2010, the final (Stage 3) index recorded an increase of 1.3%, the intermediate (Stage 2) index recorded an increase of 1.1% and the preliminary (Stage 1) index recorded an increase of 1.2%. Through the year to September quarter 2010, the final (Stage 3) index increased by 2.2%, the intermediate (Stage 2) index increased by 2.4% and the preliminary (Stage 1) index increased by 2.9%.
The increase of 1.3% in the final (Stage 3) index reflected a rise of 1.3% in the price of domestically produced items and a rise of 0.9% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for electricity, gas and water (+8.9%), building construction (+1.0%) and beverage and malt manufacturing (+6.6%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices received for petroleum refining (-3.3%). The imports component increased due to rises in the prices for industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing (+2.5%), clothing manufacturing (+3.7%) and other chemical product manufacturing (+2.1%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices for photographic and scientific equipment manufacturing (-3.2%).
The increase of 1.1% in the intermediate (Stage 2) index reflected a rise of 1.1% in the price of domestically produced items and a rise of 1.3% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for grain, sheep, beef and dairy cattle farming (+7.0%), coal mining (+12.6%), electricity, gas and water (+3.2%), oil and gas extraction (+5.0%) and road freight transport (+1.4%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices received for petroleum refining (-4.7%) and other agriculture (-3.4%). The imports component increased due to rises in prices for petroleum refining (+12.6%), iron and steel manufacturing (+10.2%), textile, clothing, footwear and leather manufacturing (+4.2%), industrial machinery manufacturing (+1.4%), electrical equipment manufacturing (+1.8%) and paper and paper product manufacturing (+3.7%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-2.8%).
The increase of 1.2% in the preliminary (Stage 1) index reflected a rise of 1.3% in the price of domestically produced items and a rise of 0.8% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in prices received for coal mining (+12.6%), electricity, gas and water (+4.1%), grain, sheep, beef and dairy cattle farming (+6.1%), oil and gas extraction (+5.0%), metal ore mining (+5.6%) and road freight transport (+1.4%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for petroleum refining (-4.7%). The imports component increased due to rises in the prices for petroleum refining (+11.1%), iron and steel manufacturing (+9.5%), paper and paper product manufacturing (+3.8%), textile, clothing, footwear and leather manufacturing (+4.3%), industrial machinery manufacturing (+1.5%), other chemical product manufacturing (+2.1%) and electrical equipment manufacturing (+2.0%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-2.8%) and basic chemical manufacturing (-0.9%).
