More Melbourne migration with Sydneysiders choosing to head south

More people are moving into Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth than leaving, while the opposite is true for Sydney, Adelaide and Darwin, according to data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

New internal migration data show that 4,000 more people moved into Melbourne in 2013-14 than moved out, the highest net gain of all Australian capital cities. Brisbane had a net migration gain of 3,500 people, while Perth had a net gain of 1,500.

However, Sydney experienced a net migration loss of 15,000 people, with most departing for other regions within New South Wales or to Melbourne. For Adelaide 3,000 more people moved out of the city than moved in, while Darwin had a net loss of 1,100 in 2013-14.

Phil Browning from the ABS said the release of today's regional migration estimates has filled a major gap in Australia's demographic data holdings.

"Until now, the only source of regional internal migration data has been the census which, although valuable, has its limitations." said Mr Browning.

"These new annual estimates will be more frequent, timely and complete, and give Australians a better understanding of how regional populations change the way they do".

The estimates released today in Migration, Australia, 2013-14 (ABS cat. no. 3412.0) are available on the ABS website https://www.abs.gov.au. They include data on the number of arrivals, departures and net moves for each region within Australia, for the years 2006-07 to 2013-14. Age and sex breakdowns and information about where people are moving to and from are also available.
