This research paper introduces a new approach to understanding changes in Queensland regional labour markets from 1976 to 2001. The methodology focusses on what people do at work by using both their occupation and industry of employment. For comparative purposes data is also presented for Australia.

Census data is used to analyse changes in five main function groups - Farm, Factory, Retail/personal services, Social Infrastructure services and the Office. Function groups are dissaggrated into 13 Functions for more detailed analysis. Characteristics of employed persons such as sex, age, income, qualifications levels, hours worked, and migration are used in this paper.
