MEDIA ALERT...OFFICIAL COMMENCEMENT - 2001 CENSUSWhat's happening: Australia’s biggest national event, the 2001 Census, will officially commence next Wednesday 25 July in Darwin. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducts the Census every five years and counts everyone in Australia. What's on offer: A launch event where the national advertising campaign will be revealed by the Hon. Joe Hockey MP, Minister for Financial Services and Regulation. This will signal the start of the Census. The delivery of the nation's first census form will follow - The Minister will farewell Dennis Trewin, Australian Statistician, as he delivers the first census form, one of over nine million, out to one of the country's most isolated communities - the employees of the Paspaley Pearl Farm at Port Bremer (one hour by seaplane north east of Darwin).

Unfortunately due to the difficulties in reaching this isolated region, the general media will not be able to accompany Mr Trewin. However, the ABS will make available (early afternoon same day) to ALL media, vision and digital high res images of Mr Trewin delivering census forms at Paspaley. Betacam showreel of TVCs will be distributed to networks on the morning of the launch. Print and radio ads will be made available through the census public information website: www.abs.gov.au/census/media. File footage and high res images of census forms, delivery and completion available on request. Local media opportunities will be available as the campaign unfolds.
