The chart below shows the trend series and seasonally adjusted series to January 2010.
In current price trend terms, Australian turnover increased 0.4% in January 2010 following increases of 0.4% in both December 2009 and November 2009.
All industry groups have had an increase in the trend for at least twelve months, except for Other Retailing (0.3%) which increased for only the third consecutive month in January 2010. Growth has slowed in Cafes, restaurant and takeaway food services (0.7%) following increases of 0.9% or higher in each of the thirteen previous months.
The following states and territories have had an increase in the trend estimate for at least seven months: Western Australia (0.7%), New South Wales (0.6%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.5%), South Australia (0.3%), Victoria (0.3%) and the Northern Territory (0.2%). Tasmania (-0.2%) has decreased for two months while Queensland (0.0%) was unchanged in January 2010.
In current price seasonally adjusted terms, Australian turnover increased by 1.2% in January 2010 following a decrease of 0.9% in December 2009 and an increase of 1.5% in November 2009.
In current price original terms, chains and other large retailers decreased 24.8% in January 2010. The estimate for smaller retailers decreased 21.8% in January 2010.
