THE PRIORITIES FOR ARTS AND CULTURAL HERITAGE RESEARCH AND STATISTICS - REVISITED AGAIN
In 2006, an ABS key issues paper and feedback questionnaire were emailed to government arts agencies, peak bodies, community arts networks, city councils, regional bodies and researchers across Australia.
A summary of the feedback was prepared for CMC SWG, and was discussed at their October meeting. In December, the ABS and CMC SWG held a workshop to further discuss research and statistical priorities. At this workshop a set of research questions – which had been identified as 'high need' from the key issues feedback – were further prioritised.
The next phase of this project is to publish the agreed set of research priorities as an ABS Information Development Plan (IDP). This plan will assess current data sources and research work relevant to each question and, where possible, identify actions. After the IDP has been published, the ABS and CMC SWG will be keen to look for opportunities to work collaboratively with other agencies to address the priority research needs.
It is hoped that the IDP will help the ABS and CMC SWG ensure that their future work programs will be relevant and will contribute to the development and monitoring of government policies and programs. The IDP may also assist other research and funding bodies to develop their projects and directions. Through the IDP we hope to better address the needs of people and organisations in the arts and cultural heritage fields and produce flow-on benefits for the public.
The IDP will be subject to regular review to include new data sources and identify changes in policy priorities and data needs.
