During 2013-14 approximately 25,100 businesses cultivated 4 million hectares of land used for pastures and 35,500 businesses cultivated 18.5 million hectares of land used for crops.
The most common cultivation practice undertaken on pasture and cropping land by agricultural businesses was to undertake no cultivation apart from sowing (where no ploughing or tilling of the soil is undertaken prior to planting a crop or pasture).
Sowing as a form of cultivation was performed on 2.9 million hectares of land used for pasture and 13.8 million hectares of land used for crops.
Western Australia and New South Wales recorded the largest areas of land prepared for crops with 6.1 million hectares and 5.1 million hectares respectively.
The region cultivating the largest area of land used for crops was Wheatbelt West (AAE 15) (5.1 million hectares) and Wheatbelt Central (AAE 11) was the region cultivating the largest area of land used for pastures (924,400 hectares).
