Crime and Safety in New South Wales More people in New South Wales were assaulted in the twelve months to April 2007 than in the previous year, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The victimisation rate for assault in 2007 was 4.4%, up from 3.5% in 2006. Victimisation rates for robbery (0.6%) and sexual assault (0.5%) remain unchanged from the previous year. The rate of crimes against households - break and enter, attempted break and enter, and motor vehicle theft - also remained steady between 2006 and 2007, at around 6.5% of NSW households. Reporting rates (offences reported to the police) for most offences have not changed except for attempted break and enter, up from 22% to 34%. Media Note: The survey asked NSW residents (aged 15+) about their experiences of household and personal crime during the 12 months prior to April 2007.
