APPENDIX 1 - DESCRIPTION OF COMMODITY GROUPS

This appendix provides a description of the specific agricultural commodities that are included in each commodity group, as collected on the ABS Agricultural Resource Management Survey 2009–10 (note that the specific data items collected on the Agricultural Census/surveys vary slightly from year-to-year).

CEREALS FOR GRAIN AND SEED

This commodity group includes:

        • Wheat for grain
        • Oats for grain
        • Barley for grain
        • Sorghum for grain
        • All other cereals for grain or seed
Important note: rice is not included in this commodity group.

HAY

This commodity group includes the following:
        • Pastures for hay
        • Cereals for hay
        • Other crops cut for hay (including vetches)
        • Pasture and cereal cut for silage
COTTON

This commodity group includes:
        • cotton lint
SUGAR CANE

This commodity group includes:
        • sugar cane for crushing
OTHER BROADACRE CROPS

This commodity groups includes the following:
        • Lupins for grain or seed
        • Chickpeas
        • Canola
        • Other winter oilseeds (includes safflower, linseed)
        • Other winter pulses (includes field peas, faba beans, lentils)
        • Summer oilseeds (includes soy beans, sunflowers, sesame)
        • Summer pulses (includes navy beans, adzuki beans, mung beans)
        • All other crops (excluding fruit and vegetables)
FRUIT (includes fruit trees, nut trees, plantation and berry fruits; excludes grapevines)

This commodity group includes:
        • Oranges
        • Mandarins
        • Apples
        • Pears (including Nashi)
        • Mangoes
        • Peaches, fresh market and processing
        • Macadamia
        • All other orchard fruit and nuts
        • Strawberries
        • Bananas
        • All other fruit
GRAPES

This commodity group includes:
        • Grapes

VEGETABLES (vegetables for human consumption)

This commodity group includes:
        • Carrots
        • Potatoes, fresh market and processing
        • Tomatoes, fresh market and processing
        • Onions (brown, white and red)
        • Mushrooms
        • All other vegetables for human consumption

NURSERY PRODUCTION

This commodity group includes the following:
        • Cultivated turf
        • Nurseries
        • Cut flowers

DAIRY PRODUCTION (excludes dairy cattle intended for beef production)

This commodity group includes the following:
        • Cows in milk and dry
        • Heifers 1 to 2 years
        • Heifers over 2 years
        • Other dairy cattle (bulls, steers, calves)

PRODUCTION FROM MEAT CATTLE (includes dairy cattle intended for beef production)

This commodity group includes the following:
        • cows and heifers 1 year and over
        • all other meat cattle (bulls, steers, calves)

PRODUCTION FROM SHEEP AND OTHER LIVESTOCK

This commodity group includes the following:
        • wool
        • sheep and lambs slaughtered
        • goats (excluding unmanaged feral goats)
        • all other livestock (e.g. horses, domesticated buffaloes)
