NSW accounts for almost all of the Australian rice crop. Most rice production is undertaken in three areas: the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, the Coleambally Irrigation Area and the Murray Valley Irrigation Area. These three areas are in the Murrumbidgee and Murray Statistical Divisions.

In 2001-02, production was 1.2 million tonnes, a decrease of 27% from the previous year.

In 2001-02, 55% of all rice produced in NSW came from the Murrumbidgee Statistical Division (647,000 tonnes). This was followed by the Murray Statistical Division with 530,000 tonnes.
