AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)
NAME OF COLLECTION
Overseas Arrivals and Departures
OVERVIEW
Overseas arrivals and departures statistics are compiled from information entered on incoming and outgoing passenger cards, visa and other information available to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
Overseas arrivals and departures data are mainly used to compile statistics on Australia's population, balance of payments, and international tourism.
In particular, overseas arrivals and departure data are used to calculate net overseas migration figures which form part of the Estimated Resident Population. Net overseas migration (NOM) is the difference between permanent and long-term arrivals, and permanent and long-term departures. Data on the intended duration of stay of overseas visitors arriving in Australia and the intended duration of absence of Australian residents travelling overseas are used to determine the numbers of permanent and long-term arrivals, and permanent and long-term departures. Passenger card data are also used to calculate migration adjustments and determine the state and territory distribution of NOM.
Detailed tabulations are available for category of movement of traveller cross tabulated with selected countries of residence and destination, intended length of stay, age, sex and other variables.
