Retail Trade fell 0.5% in March 2011
The latest ABS Retail Trade figures show that Australian retail turnover fell 0.5% in March 2011, seasonally adjusted, following an upwardly revised 0.8% rise the previous month.
Turnover fell in Department stores (-3.0%), Food retailing (-0.4%), Household goods retailing (-0.3%), Other retailing (-0.1%) and Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (-0.1%). Turnover rose in Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (0.1%).
The fall in Australian retail turnover was driven by Queensland (-2.9%). Turnover also fell in Western Australia (-0.4%), New South Wales (-0.1%), Tasmania (-1.4%) and the Australian Capital Territory (-0.3%). Turnover rose in Victoria (0.9%), South Australia (0.3%) and the Northern Territory (0.3%).
Trend turnover rose 0.1% in March 2011. This follows a rise of 0.1% in February 2011 and a rise of 0.1% in January 2011. Trend turnover rose 2.0% in March 2011 compared with March 2010.
