Domestic accommodation industry income up 20%


Australia's accommodation industry shows signs of strong growth, with a 26% increase in total income over the three years to 2000-01. Businesses in the industry generated $8,286 million (m) total income in 2000-01, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

However industry operating profits increased marginally by 0.2% to 8.1% in 2000-01. The accommodation industry's pre-tax profit was $620 m.

Accommodation provision was the main source of income for the industry ($5,001 m or 60%), with meal and liquor sales accounted for a further 24% of total income.

Additional interesting facts from the publication include:
  • The industry had total expenses of $7,680 m, with labour costs accounting for more than one-third or $2,739 m,
  • There were 106,051 people employed in the industry at the end of June 2001, up 12% from June 1998,
  • The vast majority (85%) of businesses in the industry employed fewer than 20 people. These accounted for 24% of total income and 27% of all people employed in the industry,
  • Businesses employing 100 or more people accounted for 3% of the industry. However, these businesses accounted for half (50%) of employment and 54% of total income, and
  • New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland accounted for 79% of employment and 80% of income for the total industry.
