Agriculture, forestry and fishing
Filled jobs in the Agriculture, forestry and fishing industry decreased by 0.4% in the June quarter 2018. This was due to a decrease in both main jobs (which decreased by 0.2%) and secondary jobs (which decreased by 2.6%).
Mining
Labour Account hours actually worked in Mining increased by 2.3% in the June quarter 2018. Combined with a slight decrease in Labour Account employed persons of 0.8%, the net result was an increase in average weekly hours actually worked per Labour Account employed person of 3.2% to 42.1 hours per week.
Manufacturing
Labour Account unemployed persons in the Manufacturing industry increased by 15.5% in the June quarter 2018. Combined with a slight increase of 0.6% in Labour Account employed persons, the total Labour Account labour force increased by 1.1% in the June quarter 2018.
Electricity, gas, water and waste services
The average hourly income per Labour Account employed person for the Electricity, gas, water and waste services industry increased by 2.6% in the June quarter 2018. This was driven by an increase of 1.1% in labour income, combined with a decrease in hours worked of 1.4%.
Construction
The number of main jobs in the Construction industry increased by 4.3% in the June quarter 2018 to now be greater than 1.1 million. Secondary jobs in the Construction industry also increased by 7.1% in the June quarter 2018.
Wholesale trade
Average hours worked per job in the Wholesale trade industry decreased by 2.5% in the June quarter 2018. This was driven by a decrease in hours worked of 1.7%, combined with a slight increase in filled jobs of 0.8%.
Retail trade
Labour Account employed persons for Retail trade remained steady, with only a slight increase of 0.8% to just under 1.4 million persons in this quarter. The number of hours worked in this industry has been in decline after peaking at 473.1 billion hours in the September quarter 2017, dropping 1.2% to 447.7 billion in the June quarter 2018.
Accommodation and food services
Filled jobs in Accommodation and food services increased by 2.2% to just under 1.2 million jobs in the June quarter 2018. The 3% increase in the number of main jobs in this period was partially offset by a decrease of 6,700 (7.7%) secondary jobs.
Transport, postal and warehousing
The Transport, postal and warehousing industry saw a drop of 5.8% in the number of hours worked in the June quarter 2018, to 297.7 million hours. This is consistent with a drop of 3.2% in the number of employed persons, to 683,100 this quarter.
Information, media and telecommunications
Filled jobs in Information media and telecommunications declined slightly in the June quarter 2018, dropping 0.5% to 180,600 jobs. Job vacancies for this industry also saw a decrease in the June quarter 2018 of 1.8% to 3,800 vacancies.
Financial and insurance services
The Financial and insurance services Labour Account labour force total saw a slight decline of 0.7% in the June quarter 2018, to 436,000 persons. This was driven by downward trends in both the number of employed persons (0.7%), and unemployed persons (3.7%).
Rental, hiring and real estate services
The average income per Labour Account employed person for Rental, hiring and real estate services saw a slight increase of 0.5% in the June quarter 2018. This came from a 0.9% increase in the number of employed persons, coupled with a 1.5% increase in total labour income.
Professional, scientific and technical services
Filled jobs in Professional, scientific and technical services remained steady, with a slight increase of 0.5% to 1.14 million jobs in the June quarter 2018. Slight increases were recorded in both main jobs (0.4%) and secondary jobs (1.8%).
Administrative and support services
Total labour income in Administrative and support services increased 3.2% to just under 14 billion dollars. This followed an increase of $515.9 million (or 4%) in the March quarter 2018, which was driven by strong movements in both compensation of employees (up 3.4%) and labour income from self-employment (12.1%).
Public administration and safety
Hours actually worked in the Public administration and safety industry fell 2.9% in the June quarter 2018 to just under 295 million hours. This drop came after trending upwards for four consecutive quarters, and followed the highest hours actually worked recorded for this industry in the March quarter 2018 at 303.7 million hours. Comparatively, the number of hours sought but not worked saw a 24.6% increase in the June quarter 2018, or roughly 2.5 million hours.
Education and training
The Education and training industry saw a slight increase of 0.9% in the number of filled jobs. These additional 10,300 jobs mainly came in the form of main jobs (7,600 or a 0.7% increase), but there were also 2,800 (or 4.7%) more secondary jobs in the June quarter 2018.
Health care and social assistance
Filled jobs in the Health care and social assistance industry increased by 2.8% in the June quarter 2018. This was driven by an increase in both main jobs (which increased by 2.6%) and secondary jobs (which increased by 8.7%).
Arts and recreation services
The number of underutilised persons in the Arts and recreation services industry increased by 8.8% in the June quarter 2018. This increase was caused by an increase in underemployed persons of 11.0%, and was partly offset by a decrease in the number of unemployed persons of 0.5%.
Other services
Total labour income in the Other services industry increased by 3.7% in the June quarter 2018.
