NAME OF COLLECTION
Attendance at Selected Cultural and Sporting Events and Venues
OVERVIEW
The Attendance at Selected Cultural and Sporting Events and Venues (ASCSEV) topic collects data on attendance at a range of cultural venues and events as well as attendance at sports events. The ASCSEV topic was collected in 1991, 1995 and 1999 as a supplementary survey to the Labour Force Survey. In 2002, ASCSEV was collected as a module in the General Social Survey and then in 2005-06 and 2009-10 as part of the Multipurpose Household Survey program. Results from the most recently collected Multipurpose Household Survey were published in December 2010.
Attendance is a key performance indicator for a number of culture and leisure venues and activities. The survey also collects socio-demographic details on attendees and non-attendees to enable cultural and sporting bodies to understand the profile of their audiences. Principal users are the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS) of the ABS, the Cultural Ministers Council Statistics Working Group (CMC SWG), the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and the Standing Committee on Recreation and Sport (SCORS) Research Group.
The ASCSEV produces two main outputs:
- Attendance at Selected Cultural Events and Venues (cat. no. 4114.0), provides information on the attendance of persons at selected cultural events and venues. Data collected include basic demographic characteristics of those who attended the events and venues, and their frequency of attendance during a 12 month period.
- Spectator Attendance at Sporting Events (cat. no. 4174.0), collects data about the characteristics of persons aged 15 years and over who attended sporting events as spectators (excluding junior and school sport)
Data items collected by the ASCSEV are capable of being cross classified by demographic characteristics including
Data Items Relevant to Migrants and Ethnicity.
