DEPARTMENT FOR VICTORIAN COMMUNITIES
NAME OF COLLECTION
Indicators of Community Strength at the Local Government Area in Victoria
OVERVIEW
The Indicators of Community Strength (ICS) survey was initiated and managed by the Department for Victorian Communities (DVC) and has been conducted in 2004 and 2006.
The ICS contains a number of established community strength indicators reported at the Local Government Area (LGA) level. Most of the indicators are also collected for the state as a whole by the Victorian Population Health Survey as well as additional indicators which are used to collect and apply data at the LGA level. Select neighbourhood data (sub-LGA level) are also being collected in the 2006 collection.
The ICS collects a number of data items relevant to community strength under the subject areas of community attitudes, participation, and the ability to get help when needed. These indicators have been created to highlight and track elements of community strength and to build a data resource that can be used to examine the importance of community strength to other social outcomes (such as education and crime).
The ICS collects country of birth, language spoken at home and a community strength indicator which asks "Do you think multiculturalism makes life in your area better?"
All levels of government and other organisations in Victorian communities are the intended audience of the data.
