approximately 56,500 agricultural businesses prepared 25.1 million hectares of land for crops and horticulture. More than half (53%) of these businesses reported that they did not undertake cultivation on some of their cropping and horticultural land.
around 26,700 businesses reported that they undertook one or two cultivations when preparing land for crops and horticulture, with only 20% of total businesses preparing land for crops and horticulture (just under 11,500 businesses) reporting three or more cultivations on some of their cropping and horticultural land.
in terms of the national area, 18.4 million hectares (73% of land prepared for crops and horticulture) were prepared using zero-till compared with 5.5 million hectares (22% of land prepared) undertaking one or two cultivations.
around 47,650 agricultural businesses prepared 15.5 million hectares of land for pastures. About three-quarters of these businesses reported that they did not undertake any cultivation.
approximately 13,500 agricultural businesses reported that they undertook one or two cultivations when preparing land for pastures, with 2,800 businesses reporting three or more cultivations.
Queensland farmers had the largest area of land prepared for pastures using zero-till (3.8 million hectares, or 93% of the area prepared for pasture in Queensland) and Tasmania had the smallest area of no cultivation (223,700 hectares, or 84%).
