North Adelaide residents recorded the highest average income in South Australia in 2009-10, according to figures releases today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

ABS Director of the Rural and Regional National Statistics Centre, Lisa Conolly said the Estimates of Personal Income for Small Areas publication uses data from the Australian Taxation Office to provide a breakdown of information such as personal income by wage and salary, investment, superannuation and annuities.

“South Australia’s top five earning regions all fall in the Greater Adelaide region with North Adelaide the highest with an average of $75,574, followed by Walkerville on $74,296, Glenside - Beaumont on $68,892, Unley - Parkside on $66,466 and Toorak Gardens on $65,999.

“The mining centre of Roxby Downs in the state's north had the highest annual average income outside of the Greater Adelaide area on $68,359 per annum.

“Other rural areas in South Australia with high average incomes included Whyalla on $48,138, the northern Outback on $47,355, Tanunda on $46,039 and Port Augusta on $44,750.

“Overall, the average total income for the state of South Australia is $44,312 which is lower than the national average of $48,530.

“Australia’s highest earners are those in the Melbourne suburb of Toorak who earn an average of $132,252 per year.

"More than 31 per cent (or 51 in number) of South Australia's regions had average total incomes above the state average of $44,312. Of this group, the majority (90 per cent) were located in or around Adelaide.

“From a state and territory perspective, the Australian Capital Territory recorded the highest average total income of $58,034, followed by Western Australia on $53,397. South Australia was ranked seventh,” said Ms Conolly.
