INDUSTRY OF EMPLOYMENT
- In the August quarter 2009, industries in which employment losses occurred, in original data terms, were Retail trade (down 13%, 18,700 persons) and Public administration and safety (down 18%, 14,700 persons). The recent falls in retail employment may be a response to increases earlier in the year following the introduction of the Government's economic stimulus packages.
- In contrast, employment growth occurred in the August quarter 2009 in the industries of Accommodation and food services (up 14%, 8,900 persons), Education and training (up 9%, 7,900 persons) and Construction (up 3.8%, 4,700 persons).
- In the 12 months to August 2009, the largest number of job losses occurred in the Professional, scientific and technical services (down 19%, 15,900 persons), Mining (down 17%, 12,100 persons) and Rental, hiring and real estate services (down 32%, 8,500 persons), reflecting the downturn in the resources and housing sectors due to the global financial crisis, the effects of which carried through in Western Australia until about August.
