The agricultural industry has been central to South Australia's economic development since the earliest days of European settlement. It is still an important contributor to the state's economy and has maintained its role as a major export earner.

There were an estimated 14,824 establishments with agricultural activity in South Australia, according to the 2001-02 Agricultural Survey.
