Barley is grown predominantly west of the Great Dividing Range, extending along the centre of NSW from the Northern Statistical Division (SD) down to the Murray SD.

In 2002-03, production was considerably reduced due to drought conditions (428,000 tonnes).

In 2002-03, just over one quarter of all barley produced in NSW came from the Northern SD (109,400 tonnes). This was closely followed by the Murrumbidgee SD with 107,400 tonnes.
