Series Starts - Sep.1972

Series Ends - Sep.2005
The 15th Series CPI will be introduced from the September quarter 2005. The Information Paper: Introduction of the 15th Series Australian Consumer Price Index (Reissue) (6462.0) was released on 11 October 2005 and contains final details of the changes. It also includes a mock-up of the new CPI publication, Consumer Price Index, Australia (6401.0).

The introduction of the 15th Series will make it necessary to amend a number of the CPI time series spreadsheets to reflect these changes. The formats for the new spreadsheets are attached, for your information. Where possible, we have tried to keep format changes to a minimum.

Please note, tables showing financial year data will no longer be provided.

For the international comparison tables 11 and 12, the data now relates to the new 15th Series series 'All groups excluding Housing and Financial and insurance services', where previously it was just 'All groups excluding Housing'. This is in accordance with the Resolution Concerning Consumer Price Indexes adopted by the Seventeenth International Conference of Labour Statisticians in 2003. The new series has only been backcast to September quarter 1989. The series for 'All groups excluding Housing' is still available for the weighted average of eight capital cities in table 8.

In line with recent ABS policy to replace the existing .wks formatted time series spreadsheets, Prices Branch of the ABS is currently developing a set of corresponding EXCEL formatted spreadsheets. It is planned to reproduce the September quarter 2005 updates in EXCEL format and release them before the end of 2005. Further, the time series spreadsheets for December quarter 2005 CPI data, due for release on 25 January 2006, will be released in EXCEL format and the .wks format will no longer be available. Clients will be notified if there are any changes to this strategy.
