AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

Retirement and Retirement Intentions

OVERVIEW

Retirement and Retirement Intentions (RRI) are compiled from the Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS), conducted throughout Australia from August 2004 to June 2005 as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey. The RRI data series focuses on people who are aged 45 years and over. Previous data on retirement and retirement intentions were collected as a supplementary survey, conducted on an irregular basis between 1980 and 1997.

Data from the survey are used to examine changes in retirement trends over time, factors which influence retirement and the income arrangements retirees and potential retirees have made to provide for their retirement. Data are used primarily in the development and review of income support and superannuation policies.

The RRI collects data under the broad topics of demographics, people who intend to retire from the labour force and people who have retired from the labour force. Data items contained within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data items relevant to migrants and ethnicity.

RRI data were collected as a topic within the MPHS along with two other topics - Barriers and Incentives to Labour Force Participation and Household Use of Information Technology. These topics are to be collected every two years.
