Questions about the use of computers and the Internet were introduced into the Census for the first time in 2001. This paper contains information about how various stages in the development and processing of the 2001 Census might have impacted on the data from these questions. Trends in the use of personal computers and the Internet are explored, and non-response rates are cross-classified with variables such as age, sex and state of enumeration. Data from the 2001 Census on the use of personal computers and the Internet is compared to data collected from two ABS Surveys. Particular attention is given to data quality issues and comparability. Finally, recommendations are made for questions about information technology use in future censuses.
