STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW
In December quarter 2010, the final (Stage 3) index increased 0.1% while the intermediate (Stage 2) index showed no movement and the preliminary (Stage 1) index increased 0.1%. Through the year to December quarter 2010, the final (Stage 3) index increased 2.7%, the intermediate (Stage 2) index increased 3.3% and the preliminary (Stage 1) index increased 3.8%.
The increase of 0.1% in the final (Stage 3) index reflected a rise of 0.7% in the price of domestically produced items, partly offset by a fall of 4.4% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for other agriculture (+18.3%), building construction (+0.8%) and accommodation (+8.6%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices received for domestic motor vehicle and part manufacturing (-1.7%). The imports component decreased due to falls in the prices for industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing (-4.9%), other manufacturing (-10.2%) and electronic equipment manufacturing (-8.6%). Partly offsetting these price falls were rises in the prices for imported motor vehicle and part manufacturing (+0.2%).
The intermediate (Stage 2) index remained unchanged in the December quarter 2010. Domestically produced items showed a rise of 0.5% offset by a fall of 3.5% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for electricity, gas and water supply (+2.8%) and basic non-ferrous metal manufacturing (+6.9%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices received for coal mining (-4.6%). The imports component decreased due to falls in the prices for industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing (-5.5%), plastic product manufacturing (-12.8%), basic chemical manufacturing (-4.5%) and iron and steel manufacturing (-7.9%). Partly offsetting these price falls were rises in the prices for non-ferrous basic metal product manufacturing (+3.4%).
The increase of 0.1% in the preliminary (Stage 1) index reflected a rise of 0.5% in the price of domestically produced items, partly offset by a fall of 3.1% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for electricity, gas and water supply (+2.4%), basic non-ferrous metal manufacturing (+6.9%) and oil and gas extraction (+3.6%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices received for coal mining (-4.6%). The imports component decreased due to falls in the prices for basic chemical manufacturing (-4.5%), iron and steel manufacturing (-7.7%), industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing (-5.5%) and plastic product manufacturing (-12.8%). Partly offsetting these price falls were rises in the prices for basic non-ferrous metal manufacturing (+4.2%).
