ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This product contains estimates of the resident populations of areas of Australia as at 30 June in each year from 2001 to 2007. The areas for which estimates are provided are Local Government Areas (LGAs), Statistical Local Areas (SLAs), Statistical Divisions (SDs), Statistical Subdivisions (SSDs), Statistical Districts and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2007 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC).
Although the majority of the text in this product focuses on changes at the LGA level, selected SLAs are referred to in some of the text and tables, particularly where Local Government Areas cover multiple SLAs, such as Brisbane (C) and Darwin (C), and in unincorporated areas within the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. Estimates of the resident population of all LGAs and SLAs in Australia are available in spreadsheets accompanying this release.
The total population of the Other Territories, namely Jervis Bay Territory, Territory of Christmas Island, Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Off-Shore Areas and Migratory is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.
ERP STATUS AND FUTURE RELEASES
The estimates in this product are final for 2001, preliminary rebased for 2002 to 2006, based on results of the 2006 Census of Population and Housing (denoted 2002pr - 2006pr), and preliminary for 2007 (denoted 2007p). The final 2006 Census-based SLA and LGA estimates for June 2002 through to June 2006 will be released on 19 August 2008 in data cubes which will be added to an earlier issue of this product, i.e. Regional Population Growth, Australia, 1996 to 2006 (cat. no. 3218.0). Preliminary population estimates for SLAs and LGAs as at June 2007 by sex and five-year age groups will also be released on 19 August 2008 in Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2007 (cat. no. 3235.0). Those estimates will aggregate to updated state and territory totals for June 2007, which will be released in the December Quarter 2007 issue of Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0).
ACCURACY OF POPULATION ESTIMATES
It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are produced using 2006 census data and mathematical models and are subject to error. Caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations. For more information see paragraphs 12 to 16 of the Explanatory Notes.
In commentary based on statistics in this publication, it is recommended that the relevant statistics be rounded. While unrounded figures are provided in spreadsheets in order to facilitate calculations of sums and percentages, accuracy to the last digit is not claimed and should not be assumed. No reliance should be placed on statistics with small values.
CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
From this issue onwards, no .pdf file will be included with this product. However, all of the content previously included in the .pdf file is available in the web-based version of the product. The Excel spreadsheets and SuperTABLE data cube that accompany this release, which can be found under the Details tab include estimates of populations of SLAs and LGAs for all years from 2001 to 2007, according to the 2007 edition of the ASGC. One extra spreadsheet is available in this issue comprising estimates of the resident populations of Statistical Districts over the same period.
The Local Government Area spreadsheets that feature on the Summary tab of this release formerly included the estimated population of each LGA at the reference date and the median age of the population in each LGA as at 30 June of the year before the reference date. From this issue the spreadsheets will contain the estimated population of each LGA and the numeric and percentage change in the population over the previous 12 months. The median ages for males, females and persons of every SLA in Australia are now available in the Summary Statistics spreadsheet in the Downloads tab of Population by Age and Sex, Australia (cat. no. 3235.0). That product will be updated annually, and the next issue will be renamed Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia.
