Queensland continued its position as having the fastest growing population of all States and Territories during 2000, with an annual growth rate of 1.6%, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

The estimated resident population of Queensland at 31 December was 3,597,700 representing 19% of the total Australian population. The interstate migration of 20,459 which was the largest for all States and Territories was a significant contributor to this growth.

There were 47,278 births registered in Queensland in 2000. Queensland's total fertility rate was 1.78 children per female in 2000, slightly higher than the 1.76 children recorded in 1999 and above the national fertility rate of 1.75. Registered Indigenous births comprised 7% of total births registered in Queensland in 2000.The total fertility rate for these registered Indigenous births was 2.32 children per female.

There were 22,425 deaths registered in Queensland in 2000. The crude death rate of 5.7 deaths per 100,000 population was lower than the rate of 6.0 recorded in 1999. The two leading causes of death continued to be malignant neoplasms (cancer) and all heart diseases, together accounting for over 55% of total deaths. Registered Indigenous deaths comprised 2% of total deaths registered in Queensland in 2000. The median age at death was 53.9 years for Indigenous males and 61.3 years for Indigenous females, compared to 75 years for all Queensland males and 81.4 years for all Queensland females.

Queensland's marriage rate remained constant in 2000, at 6.4 marriages per 1,000 population. Of the 22,842 marriages registered in 2000, 64% were the first marriage for both partners. The trend of the last decade for females to marry males around two years older continued in 2000.

There were 10,092 divorces granted in Queensland in 2000. The crude divorce rate of 2.8 divorces per 1,000 population was higher than the Australian rate of 2.6.
