The objective of this paper is to provide an evaluation of the quality of income data collected in the 1996 Census.
The issues analysed in this paper include a comparison between income distributions in the 1991 and 1996 Censuses, non-response rates, the impact of the introduction of new low income response categories and comparisons of 1996 Census data with both the 1995-96 Survey of Income and Housing Costs (SIHC) conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistic, and the 1995-96 Taxation Statistics compiled by the Australian Taxation Office.
