Dairying is predominantly located along the coastal fringes of the state; the highest concentrations of milk cattle are found in the Murray, Hunter and Mid-North Coast Statistical Divisions (SDs).

The NSW milk cattle herd stood at 428,000 at 30 June 2002.

In 2001-02, 21% of milk cattle in NSW were found in the Murray SD (91,000). This was followed by the Hunter SD with 69,000.
