  • About this Release

The quality of ABS balance of payments statistics has been under review and improvement for many years. Subjective assessments of the lower than desirable quality of the monthly balance on current account series, coupled with recently promulgated international reporting obligations requiring quarterly, rather than monthly, balance of payments data has prompted the ABS to review with users the options for monthly balance of payments statistics. This information paper provides background to the issues of balance of payments data quality and quality improvement, the emerging concerns about the monthly data, and the options under consideration for addressing those concerns. User views are sought on the proposal to discontinue the monthly balance of payment statistics and, if so the merits of the various options proposed in this information paper for replacement series.See also 5367.0.
