AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

Population Survey Monitor (PSM)

OVERVIEW

The Population Survey Monitor (PSM) was a user funded survey which collected information from households throughout Australia. The PSM was first conducted in August 1993 and then each quarter in the months of February, May, August and November until the final survey in November 2000.

The PSM was available to all government departments and agencies willing to fund the ABS to collect data from households on a range of topics. The PSM was also used by the ABS to collect information for ABS sponsored topics.

Data are available for a large range of topics for both person and household level data items. While outputs vary for each PSM collection, many data items were repeated. Broad level data items included in each quarterly collection include household characteristics, education, labour force and employment. Other topics in PSM collections included time use, housing/moving, technology, victim of crime, sport, spending, safety, energy, health, and culture.

The survey sample size was initially set at 2,000 and was raised to 3,000 from the February 1996 collection.

The PSM was conducted for the last time for the November quarter 2000. Topics covered in the PSM have been incorporated into the Survey of Education and Training and the General Social Survey.
