THE NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL STATISTICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (NASIS)


The National Agricultural Statistical Information System (NASIS) is defined here as the 'agriculture' component of the Australian statistical system. The NASIS exists to inform policy and decision making across the economic, environment and societal dimensions of the agricultural sector. The NASIS consists of agricultural statistical assets and the users, producers and custodians of these agricultural statistics across government, industry, academia and the community.

To be sustainable and effective into the future, the NASIS must be designed to be enduring and subject to minimal change at a high level from situational changes. The NASR has developed a conceptual framework to assist in understanding Australian agriculture and the statistical information needs of the sector. This conceptual framework consists of enduring goals for Australian agriculture and supporting data themes which define the NASIS’ purpose and target outcomes. Feedback on these underpinning layers of the NASIS was sought from stakeholders in the first phase of NASR consultation.

Subsequent layers of the NASIS framework which will be explored during the NASR’s second phase of consultation, revolve around understanding the system’s:


    · stakeholders: organisations and individuals across government, industry, academia and the community considered to be the users, producers and custodians of agricultural statistics

    · agricultural statistical assets: those that currently exist and those which are needed


The preliminary findings from the first phase of the NASR's consultation have begun to form a picture of the system's priority statistical assets, system stakeholders, information gaps and opportunities for improving the effectiveness of the system.

The next phase of NASR consultation will further refine the layers of the NASIS framework as well as consider the development of an assessment, coordination and governance framework for the NASIS to enable the system to function effectively into the future.
