SELECTED CHARACTERISTICS OF IT USE IN AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS
More than a third of all businesses reported that IT support was provided by contractors or consultants (37%). The use of IT support increased with each successive employment size range for person(s) working for the business who are IT specialists, suppliers of software or hardware and contractors or consultants. Businesses with 0-4 persons employed were the most likely to report no IT support (27%). Businesses with 200 or more persons employed were almost six times more likely to report that IT specialists working for the business provided IT support (71%), than businesses with 0-4 persons employed (12%). Overall, a third of businesses in the Agriculture, forestry and fishing industry had no IT support (34%), followed by businesses in Transport, postal and warehousing (31%). Businesses in the Mining and Financial and insurance service industries were the most likely to report that IT support was provided by contractors or consultants (both 54%). Businesses in the Mining industry recorded the greatest proportion of businesses using IT to a high extent to undertake accounting (73%), human resources (56%) and business planning (31%), whilst Information media and telecommunications recorded the greatest proportion of business using IT to a high extent to undertake production/service operations (67%), marketing (43%) and business planning (31%).
