CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Scheduled annual revisions for the 2006-07 financial year include:

• Natural increase using date of occurrence births and deaths data;
• Net overseas migration using the migration adjustment based on actual traveller behaviour;
• Net interstate migration based on 2006 Census - see Explanatory Notes 16-20;
• Estimated resident population;
• Total fertility rates, standardised death rates and infant mortality rates published in tables 13-15;
• Net overseas migration from September quarter 2006 onwards has been revised to remove foreign diplomats and their families.

The most significant revision relates to the estimate for 2006-07 net overseas migration which was revised from a preliminary estimate of 177,600 to a final estimate of 232,800. Page 6 provides more details.


ERP STATUS

Data for 30 September 2001 to 30 June 2006 are final and based on the 2006 Census of Population and Housing. Data for the 2006-07 financial year are revised and data from 30 September 2007 onwards are preliminary. For further information refer to paragraph 7 of the Explanatory Notes.

Due to the collection and estimation methods applied to produce preliminary statistics, users should exercise caution when analysing and interpreting the most recent annual and quarterly estimates for all components of the estimated resident population, particularly when making time series comparisons.


UPCOMING RELEASES

Preliminary estimates of regional populations in Australia (including Local Government Areas) at 30 June 2008 will be released on 23 April 2009 in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2007-08 (cat. no. 3218.0).

Updated Time Series Spreadsheets for Population by Age and Sex, Australian States and Territories, Jun 2008 (cat. no. 3201.0) will be released on Friday, 20 March 2008. This product will contain Time Series Spreadsheets containing population by single year of age and sex for each state and territory from June 1971 to June 2008.
