Wheat growing in South Australia is dependent on receiving adequate rainfall in the planting and growing periods from April to November. In 2002-03, production was reduced to less than half of the previous year due to drought conditions, down from 4.8 million tonnes to 2.1 million tonnes.

In 2002-03, 45% of all wheat produced in South Australia came from the Eyre Statistical Division (877,700 tonnes) and 32% came from the Yorke and Lower North Statistical Division (621,900 tonnes).
