Australia's net worth reaches $1.8 trillion at June 1995

Australia's net worth reached $1.8 trillion dollars by 30 June 1995, according to the "Australian National Accounts: National Balance Sheet" estimates released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

In March 1995 the ABS first produced experimental estimates of Australia's balance sheet, including estimates of certain natural resources. Since then further work has been undertaken leading to today's release of estimates of Australia's balance sheet.

Included in these estimates (provided for years ended 30 June 1989 to 1995) are the value of produced assets such as buildings, machinery and equipment, and other engineering structures as well as financial assets and liabilities as well as sub-soil assets, forest timber value and land.

Highlights from the data estimates include:
  • Australia's net worth rose 4.3 per cent on the previous year, and 18 per cent over the six years from June 1989
  • Produced assets were estimated at $1.3 trillion at 30 June 1995, a rise of 3.7 per cent on the previous year, and a rise of 25 per cent since June 1989
    • The natural resources were estimated at $784 billion at 30 June 1995, a rise of 7 per cent on the previous year, and a rise of 20 per cent since June 1989
    • Households and unincorporated enterprises accounted for roughly three-quarters of Australia's net worth, and was estimated at $1.4 trillion at 30 June 1995;
    • General government accounted for roughly one-fifth of Australia's net worth, and was estimated at $344 billion at 30 June 1995.
