AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

The Labour Force Experience Survey (LFES)

OVERVIEW

The Labour Force Experience Survey (LFES) is conducted biennially (since 1995) as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey. It provides information about the labour force experiences of persons aged 15 to 69 years over the 12 months prior to the survey date.

The LFES collects a range of data on time spent in labour force activities, including episodes of work or looking for work, and time spent out of the labour force. Data items contained within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data items relevant to migrants and ethnicity and other data items such as age and sex.

Estimates from the LFES are used to monitor the extent and nature of labour force participation over an extended period and to complement gross flows estimates from the monthly Labour Force Survey in the analysis of labour market dynamics. The information is used to construct profiles of various groups within the labour force, particularly those looking for work.
