AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)
NAME OF COLLECTION
Prisoners in Australia
OVERVIEW
The Prisoners in Australia collection presents information from the National Prison Census held on 30 June each year. Statistics are derived from information collected by the ABS from administrative records held by corrective service agencies in each State and Territory. The collection provides information on the demographic and legal characteristics of prisoners such as age, sex, legal status, the most serious offence(s)/charge(s) for which the person is in prison, the aggregate sentence and the length of time the person is expected to spend in prison, as well as time on remand information. Statistics are produced for the total prisoner population, sentenced and unsentenced prisoners, Indigenous sentenced prisoners, federal prisoners and periodic detainees. These statistics provide a basis for measuring change over time.
Data items contained within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data items relevant to migrants and ethnicity.
