Family Transitions and History Survey (FTHS)


OVERVIEW

The Family Transitions and History Survey (FTHS) was conducted from July 2006 to June 2007, with results expected to be released in the first quarter of 2008.

The FTHS aims to provide key statistics about family formation and dissolution, individuals' experiences of family and relationship changes and fertility expectations. This information will be used by government departments, welfare agencies and researchers to better understand how families are changing.

Specific topics include registered marriage history, de facto marriage history, children ever born, fertility expectations and transitions associated with younger people leaving home. The FTHS is being conducted in conjunction with the Family Characteristics Survey and can be linked to information from that survey. Data items contained within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data items relevant to migrants and ethnicity.

The FTHS will be conducted on a 6 yearly basis.
