EXPLANATORY NOTES


INTRODUCTION

This SuperTABLE cube contains selected data from the 2005 Motor Vehicle Census.

The 2005 Motor Vehicle Census was conducted at 31 March 2005.


SCOPE AND COVERAGE

Motor vehicle registration statistics are derived from data provided by State and Territory motor vehicle registration authorities. The statistics reflect information recorded in registration documents and, where possible, use the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to decode the information presented here.

The scope of the statistics in this SuperTABLE cube

    includes - passenger vehicles, campervans, light commercial vehicles, light rigid trucks, heavy rigid trucks, articulated trucks, non-freight carrying trucks, buses and motorcycles, including those with diplomatic and consular plates and State and Commonwealth owned vehicles registered for unrestricted use on Australian roads.
    excludes - vehicles belonging to the defence forces, recreation vehicles such as trail bikes and sand dune buggies (in those States where registration is required), unpowered vehicles such as caravans and trailers, trailed plant and equipment.


DATA CONTENT

This SuperTABLE cube allows tables to be built using these fields:
    Make - the name of the vehicle make
    Model - the name of the vehicle model
    Postcode - the postcode of the address of the registered vehicle owner
    State/territory - New South Wales
    Vehicle Type - passenger vehicles, campervans, light commercial vehicles, light rigid trucks, heavy rigid trucks, articulated trucks,non-freight carrying trucks, buses and motorcycles
    Year of manufacture - The year in which the vehicle was manufactured available in groups of 1901 to 1950, 1951 to 1960, 1961 to 1970, 1971 to 1980, 1981 to 1990, yearly thereafter to 2005 and not stated.


GLOSSARY

Articulated trucks - Motor vehicles constructed primarily for load carrying, consisting of a prime mover having no significant load carrying area, but with a turntable device which can be linked to one or more trailers.

Buses - Motor vehicles constructed for the carriage of passengers. Included are all motor
vehicles with 10 or more seats, including the driver's seat.

Campervans - Self-propelled motor vehicles containing an area primarily used for accommodation.
Included are motor homes and powered caravans.

GVM - Tare weight (i.e. unladen weight) of the motor vehicle, plus its maximum carrying capacity excluding trailers.

Light commercial vehicles - Vehicles primarily constructed for the carriage of goods, and which are less than or equal to 3.5 tonnes GVM. Included are utilities, panel vans, cab-chassis and forward-control load carrying vehicles (whether four-wheel drive or not).

Motorcycles - includes 2 and 3 wheeled mopeds, scooters, motor tricycles and motor cycles with side cars.

Motor vehicle registration - includes the registrations of motor vehicles as recorded by the motor vehicle registration authorities in the relevant State or Territory at the time of the census.

Non-freight carrying trucks - Specialist motor vehicles or motor vehicles fitted with special purpose equipment, and having little or no goods carrying capacity (e.g. ambulances, cherry pickers, fire trucks and tow trucks).

Passenger vehicles - Motor vehicles constructed primarily for the carriage of up to nine persons (including the driver). Included are cars, station wagons, four-wheel drive passenger vehicles and forward-control passenger vehicles. Excluded are campervans.

Rigid trucks - Motor vehicles of GVM greater than 3.5 tonnes, constructed with a load carrying area. Included are normal rigid trucks with a tow bar, draw bar or other non-articulated coupling on the rear of the vehicle.

Rigid trucks are divided into two categories:
- Light rigid trucks of GVM greater than 3.5 tonnes and less than or equal to 4.5 tonnes
- Heavy rigid trucks of GVM greater than 4.5 tonnes

State/territory - The state or territory motor registry at which a vehicle is registered.

VIN - The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) uniquely identifies each vehicle. Embedded in the number are coded details of make and model together with other relevant information about the vehicle. The VIN is collected by the motor vehicle registration authorities at the time of registration.
