The number of people working as Outdoor Adventure Instructors in their main job grew 66 per cent between 2006 and 2011, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today.

ABS Director of Culture, Recreation and Migrant Statistics, Andrew Middleton, said today’s Employment in Sport and Recreation publication uses Census data to highlight the number of people in sport and recreation occupations across Australia as well as the nature of those occupations.

“In 2011 there were 1,382 Outdoor Adventure Instructors in Australia compared to 833 in 2006,” Mr Middleton said.

“There was a 65 per cent increase among those who worked as Outdoor Adventure Guides, with 347 in 2011 up from 210 people in 2006.

“The results showed that 95,590 people listed their main job as being in a sport and physical recreation occupation, the majority being male (58 per cent).

“Over 90 per cent of people working in sport and physical recreation occupations were employed within the private sector, and over half (55 per cent) were employed on a part-time basis,” Mr Middleton said.
