Why is ARP being discontinued?
The June Quarter 2011 release will be the final publication of Average Retail Prices of Selected Items, Eight Capital Cities (cat. no. 6403.0.55.001). The ABS is of the view that the Average Retail Prices (ARP) data neither measures price change over time nor price levels between cities in a robust manner. Caveats are placed on the ARP data indicating limitations, but the data continues to be used for purposes beyond its scope. The ABS considers that the ARP data is not fit for the purpose for which it is being used. For more details about changes to the CPI and ARP, please refer to Information Paper: Outcome of the 16th Series Australian Consumer Price Index Review (cat. no. 6469.0), or www.abs.gov,au.
